Diploma of Visual Arts - Illustration Stream

Push the boundaries of your art practice and develop your artistic skills and techniques. Work towards becoming an illustrator or designer in our Diploma of Visual Arts at Melbourne Polytechnic. Be bold and brave – follow your passion, it could lead anywhere.

Turn your passion into a passionate career

Our Diploma of Visual Arts combines specialised technical, creative and conceptual skills to plan and realise a body of work in one or more art forms.

Practice at this level is underpinned by arts theory and history and the ability to critically analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources. You will also have the opportunity to discuss and expand on complex ideas around the art of illustration.

You could work in a wide range of contexts including being self-employed, or working in the arts sector, government, community and commercial organisations.

Illustration Stream – Diploma of Visual Arts

The Illustration stream prepares you to work in the communication arts industries, in both printed and online formats. You could also find working opportunities within the advertising and marketing sectors.

You’ll receive advanced training in drawing, applied history and theory, and business skills.

Learn the crucial skills necessary to coordinate group exhibitions as part of an arts business strategy. You’ll learn the process from concept development through to the logistics of gallery operations, as well as the design of promotional material.

A range of industry sponsors support our end-of-year exhibition programs. You will have the opportunity to extend your networks and industry contacts.

Industry connections and resources

Your classes will be taught by specialist subject teachers. You will have access to well-resourced specialist studios and classrooms for each subject area (drawing, printmaking, painting, digital images, design, history and theory).

Melbourne Polytechnic has excellent gallery venues for industry-sponsored exhibitions.

Course outcomes

As a graduate, you will have a direct pathway into the Advanced Diploma of Creative Product Development, where you can focus on a personal year-long project with mentor support and access to department facilities. Many of our past graduates have successfully applied for Bachelor studies at university level on the basis of their folio works from the Diploma year.

Melbourne Polytechnic alumni boast many successful illustrators and exhibiting artists. Some of them have returned as teachers in our Diploma programs to share their professional industry expertise.
