In your Bachelor of Arts degree you will choose from a select range of majors related to the destination Masters degree.  You’ll also have the scope to choose from almost 40 different areas of study for your Minor and electives, including languages, social sciences, communications, politics, human rights, and international relations.  While developing an informed, critical awareness of the fields you're most passionate about, you’ll lay the groundwork for a wealth of exciting careers.

As a high achieving student (75% average), in the third year of your degree you will start to transition into the Masters degree. The Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies will develop your skills in translation and interpreting in English and another language, with an understanding of both practice and theory.

Not only is our course approved at the Professional Interpreter, Professional Translator and Conference Interpreter levels by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI); Monash is the only university in Australia to be a member of the Conference Internationale d'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interpretes (CUITI), the world's oldest and most prestigious international association of tertiary institutions offering degrees in translation and interpreting.

As preparation for transitioning into the Masters degree during your third year, you will select from one of the following areas for your major:

  • Chinese Studies
  • French Studies
  • German Studies
  • Indonesian Studies
  • Italian Studies
  • Japanese Studies
  • Korean Studies
  • Spanish and Latin American Studies

The Bachelor of Arts offers both diversity and focus, and builds informed, skilful and critically aware citizens of the world. In addition to your major, you can sample from a wide range of study areas, giving you a comprehensive base across areas in the arts, humanities and social sciences. You'll develop a rich understanding of human difference and communication, the complexities of social organisation, and humankind's trajectory through the past and into the future.

With many opportunities to undertake study overseas, or via a study tour or internship program, you’ll become an expert in your chosen area, and will be work ready, equipped with the core skills employers in all sectors are looking for including:

Aimed at students with advanced bilingual proficiency, the Masters course combines practical internships with rigorous academic foundations to give you both the conceptual skills and industry experience for a successful career. You’ll also graduate with a thorough understanding of research methodology and the ability to undertake independent research..

There are two specialisations available in the course:

  • Translation (offered for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish), and
  • Interpreting and translation (offered for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish).

Through professional internships, you will gain real-world experience, pick up useful skills to prepare for the transition from university to the workplace, and build professional networks, improving your graduate employability prospects. Participating employers and industry partners may become a useful recruitment resource for graduates of the program.

  • the Bachelor of Arts

and

  • the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies

As a graduate with a degree in Arts you’ll be prepared for global employment opportunities in a wide range of occupations and settings. The Masters course provides an academic qualification for those intending to pursue careers as professional interpreters and translators working in a broad range of fields, such as business, law, science, technology, and cross-cultural communication, or as conference interpreters in international conferences or diplomatic meetings. Translation qualifications can also open the door to any language or communication-related area including publishing, editing, journalism, technical and other writing, or public relations.
