Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design

Our Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design is a one year, full-time dynamic course that provides a pathway from the Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design and is delivered over three days a week. The course focuses on further developing key hand-working skills learnt in the Diploma and provides tuition in advanced jewellery-making techniques, and introduces high-level technical jewellery-making skills to promote individual attainment. The course culminates in a graduate exhibition where students showcase their talent and jewellery designs to industry specialists, peers, family and friends.

If you desire to pursue or enhance an emerging career in jewellery, this course is for you. Focusing predominantly on your hand-working skill base, you will learn technological aspects of making jewellery and gain industry knowledge, experience and networks.

Study areas include design, drawing and rendering, development of a series of jewellery works, small business set-up, research and CAD (computer-aided design).

You will learn the following techniques:

  • Traditional techniques of filigree, granulation, inlay, keum-boo, repousse and chasing,
  • Advanced jewellery techniques including a selection of the following: advanced soldering, fusing, complex hinges and specialised catches for lockets, containers or small vessels, stone setting (claw, bezel, gypsy, grain, pave, tension), rapid prototyping, enamelling (cloisonné, champlevé, basse taille) and articulated components.

The course also includes a range of study areas to ensure the student experience is rigorous, engaging and industry focused. These include:

  • Design development,
  • Production jewellery,
  • Small business set-up,
  • Exhibition planning and design.

The Jewellery workshops are fitted with up-to-date equipment, featuring an abundance of natural light, presenting an attractive, comfortable learning environment to enhance the student experience.

Industry connections and resources

You will learn from teachers who are recognised experts in the field. The course culminates in a two-week public exhibition that provides the opportunity to showcase your work and launch your career in jewellery and object design. Each year, many industry representatives from galleries, retailers and suppliers attend the exhibition. This is an opportunity for graduates to develop networks and connections in the industry.

Industry based projects are included with real life outcomes for students.

Employment Outcomes

The Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design is designed to prepare you to establish your own designer/maker studio, creating bespoke, one off commissions for clients as well as production jewellery and objects for sale in retail/online outlets. Graduates from the Advanced Diploma have gone on to work as technical assistants in the area of bionic technologies and as jewellery studio technicians in the creative education sector.

Assessment

You will be assessed through your course work and folio presentation. Various forms of assessment are used including practical exercises, written exercises and studio journals. To qualify for assessment students must ensure all course fees and levies are paid in full.
