Melbourne Polytechnic Prahran

Diploma of Theatre Arts

The one-year diploma course is designed to train actors and theatre workers who can work as performers and production team members in theatre companies, and in the production of theatre events and festivals. During training students work creatively with scripted works developing performance skills in voice, acting, movement and improvisation. The course offers a balance of performance, technical, marketing, performing arts in context, and theatre event & festival production skills.

Hone your skills in theatre craft

This is a very ‘hands on’ practical course. Push your creative boundaries and extend your current skills in improvisation, movement, voice and acting.

A highlight of the course is the script- writing component where you will learn how to stage your own plays and present them to a live audience.

Industry connections and resources

You will have access to the David Williamson Theatre. It’s a great facility to make the most of, and has a 120 seat facility with industry standard lighting rig, lighting and sound equipment, flying systems and set and prop construction area and stage storage spaces.

There is also a smaller theatre training venue and a large movement room – these make excellent rehearsal spaces. You will also be timetabled into our Mac and PC labs for marketing, theatre history and production classes.

We offer you many opportunities to get involved. You may be invited to work on shows in the Melbourne Comedy Festival or the Fringe Festival. We have enduring connections with small and large-scale theatre companies such as Arts Centre Melbourne, La Mama, The Carlton Courthouse, Red Stitch Theatre Company and Impro Melbourne.

Our teachers are passionate about you and your learning. They’ll pass on their industry tips and knowledge because they want to see you succeed.

Employment outcomes

You will train as a theatre worker with skills in acting, theatre lighting, sound, stage management, set/prop making, marketing and performing arts in context. This will enable you to work in both small and large scale organisations and theatres.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of face-to-face, project work and industry-based learning. Your employability skills will form part of the assessment, including communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, self-management, and learning and technology.

Recognition of Prior Learning

You can seek RPL where your work or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. Academic Credit is granted on a case-by-case basis, according to our Academic Credit policy and associated procedures. Applications for Academic Credit will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic academics and where appropriate, industry experts.
